Puzzler: What is the TRUE Cost of Free?

What is the True Cost of FREE?
And, How Good is that Deal, Really?
Whether you are working a rebate deal, doing a drugstore freebie, participating in a consignment event, or joining a warehouse discount club, you need to look at the true cost.  Follow the dollar. Then, make an informed consumerist decision.

When I first started couponing and doing rebates, etc.., I made a few rookie mistakes.  I didn't look at the overall big picture on what I was doing and spending to save a buck or even make a buck.
I saw a SC Johnson rebate offer and got super excited. It was buy any 3 SC Johnson items and get a $5 rebate check by mail.  It was my first rebate. I realized that SHOUT! Wipes from the travel section are SC Johnson. I had 55c off one coupons (3) in my binder. AND, the wipes were only $1.09 ea.  We use these all the time.  I had picked up one set of those wipes for something else already. So, I found that receipt. I got so excited I grabbed my coupons and the kids and went to Target. Target is a 15+min drive.  So, I bought two more sets of wipes and got a couple other items I hadn't really needed before next week's Target trip.  I ended up spending $1.73 after tax on the SHOUT wipes for the rebate.  But I was getting a $5 check back! What an awesome moneymaker, right?

No.

Here's why:

$5.00
-1.73 (cost of the items)
-$2.50 (gas to go there and come back since I ran out when I didn't need to go just to work the rebate.)
- 40c (stamps)
-5c (envelop)
___________
32c moneymaker

Yeah, I got the items free and got paid to own the items. But it was one of those aha moments. To get them free and to make 32c, I had to take an HOUR out of my day to run to the store, get the items, wait in line, and then come home. For 32c and 3 travel packs of SHOUT wipes.

That was not using my time or resources to the best of my abilities. It was a wake up call. Now, I look at the big picture and follow the money.

You can and need to take this philosophy to every deal you do and money you spend to get a better bargain.  My husband takes it to extremes and says "That $1 you just spent on the candy bar could have been $16 in retirement money".  He is right, to an extent. But I wont take it that far.

I will take it as far as evaluating our need for a discount warehouse membership.  I have a family of five to cook and provide for. If I say we don't need a discount membership, chances are you are throwing your money away to have one too.  One of my friends is like "BUT you SAVE 50c  a week on milk ALONE!"  Do you know how many gallons of milk you would have to buy to make, say, a $30 annual membership fee pay for itself? More than 60 gallons of milk.  That's BEFORE you start to save on milk. And, you can coupon for milk (Kelloggs and others put out save $1 on milk WYB cereal, etc)  You can use drugstore rewards on milk.  But, you interrupt me, But they sell more than milk.  I get that. That super cheap box of diapers you buy in  bulk? That is about 3 packages worth right? So you just lost the chance to use up to 6 coupons on that box of diapers.  Now, you have to take what the savings on that box of diapers is and subtract out the coupons you could have used. Then, you get a real savings.  Take that real savings and put it towards the membership fee.  I am telling you.. if you would only coupon, it would be more beneficial in most cases.  If you pay $30 for a savings membership.. make sure you are saving MORE than that $30 annually AND more than coupons would have saved as well.  Personally, I like to keep my $30 upfront in an interest bearing account at the bank than hand it over.  **Disclaimer.. you will totally find me in a warehouse savings club from time to time. Our local one has Churros. Hot fresh yummy ones. AND, 87c huge fountain sodas.  BUT, I did NOT pay for my membership. I got it for free.  And I do think there are redeeming qualities to such a club.  Like the $16 awesomely decorated, yummy cakes.  And, the rotisserie chickens are larger and cheaper. Most of the items in such a club are not worth the membership fees. BUT if you are NOT going to coupon and you  get such a membership for FREE.. well.. I will look the other way and munch my churro.

When looking into consignment events, or even having your own yard sale, consider the cost of it all. What are the fees? How much are the supplies to price your items? How much to rent a table for your own sale? Advertising? Signage? Etc.  It all comes with a dollar mark. What are you hoping to make vs how much time you are going to put into getting it ready vs how much you will spend/be charged to make that money?

What about that pricey family membership to the zoo, waterpark, museum, etc.. even if they are having a sale... How many times would you have to go before it paid for itself? What is the true cost in terms of items you might purchase when there (souvenirs), food, gas, etc to go?  Make sure it will be really worth it before you commit to the money for it.

Beware the FREE:

Once upon a time, my husband did freelance work in exchange for a year of free dance lessons for our child.  We had never done dance before. We did not have the money for such a pricey extracurricular and would not have done dance had this opportunity for a trade out occur.  So, we were like YAY free dance!  By the end of the year, we paid more than $1000 for our naivete. Free dance did not mean Free dance class uniform, free tap shoes, free ballet shoes, two free costumes, free "cheapest" dance class photo package, free souvenir book from the recital, free venue fee, free tickets to the recital or even free teacher gift at the end of the year.  Also, the gas, time and of course, fast food trips after class (I promise my kids love veggies).  No, we paid for each of those things. It was more like we got the monthly tuition waived for the work my husband did.  Had we realized the real cost up front, we would not have done that trade out that year.  $1000 so a 3 yr old can have an extracurricular is too steep for my couponing heart.  Now, if she had been older and begging for class.. that's one thing. And while she did have fun, she didn't become BFFs with anyone in class and doesn't remember a lick of dance now.

The main point here is to follow your money. Follow it and it might lead you down the magical path to moneymaking scenarios.  But don't get hooked on what looks like a good deal upfront.  And, calm down when you see a deal you are excited to work.  Don't waste the gas and time. Work such things into your route.  I have learned that rookie mistake. :)  Work Smarter, Not Harder too!

Tangled Deals this Week

Tangled on Dvd and Blu Ray
Deals I Have Found This Week
There are many deals out there for Tangled this week.  I am highlighting just a few of them here.  Check out the deals.. they MIGHT get a bit better.. new coupons MIGHT be released... you never know.  These are some of my picks for Tangled deals as they stand now.

First! Remember the Rebates to help you determine the "final price" of your copy of Tangled.
Here are ones I have found:
  • The Success Rice Tangled Rebate Offer- Buy any 2 packages of Success Rice AND the Tangled movie and submit for a $5 rebate check.  This past Sunday, there was a $1 off 2 Success Rice coupon.  Go HERE for the official terms of this rebate.  You have until July to mail your request. You will mail a copy of your receipt for the Success Rice and one of the proof of purchase tabs from the Tangled movie to claim your $5 rebate check.
  • Get your hair cut at your local Cost Cutters. Then, submit a photo copy of your receipt along with a proof of purchase tab from the Tangled movie and get a $5 rebate check. Go HERE for information about this rebate. You have until May 31 for this rebate offer.
Also,THIS coupon is out for $5 off the 4 disc Blu Ray/DVD combo pack. Just print it and take it with you.

AND! Go HERE to get your FREE Tangled Charm Bracelet when you enter in your unique Disney Movie Rewards Code you find in your copy of Tangled.  You will pay about $2.99 in S/H.

Here are some deal scenarios I have found to my liking:

KMART-
Buy The Tangled Blu-Ray combo pack, get a free $14.99 Rapunzel Doll for FREE (while supplies last). Then, you can work the two rebate deals. They don't list the price in the ad for the movie. So, that's a bummer.

TARGET-
A few options here:
1. Buy Tangled on DVD for $15.99.  Submit two $5 Rebates listed above. Own Tangled on DVD for $5.99 after your rebate checks come in.

2.  Buy Tangled on Blu-Ray plus DVD pack for $19.99. Own it for $9.99 after you get your rebate checks in.  Specially marked combo packs come with the Tangled Golden Book for FREE.

3.  Buy Tangled on 4 Disc Combo Pack for $24.99. Use $5 off coupon, making it $19.99. Submit for two rebates, making it $9.99 after the checks come in.   Specially marked packs come with the Tangled Golden Book for FREE.

4.  Buy Tangled on 4 Disc Combo Pack for $24.99. Use $5 off coupon, making it $19.99.  ALSO, buy the 4 disc combo packs for either Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, or Snow White for $29.99.  GET a $10 gift card when you buy any Tangled combo pack AND one of the Disney Classics.   Total is right at $50 for both. Then, you get the $10 rebate checks, so $40. AND you get the $10 Target Gift Card, so $30 for both combo packs. *And, specially marked Tangled combo packs have the free Golden Book attached.

ALSO, there is a PRINTABLE $5 off Tangled 4 disc combo pack available HERE.
I am not sure yet if that is a TARGET Stackable coupon or not yet. I am going to swap computers and print it and let you know!

Personally, I am leaning more towards the Target deals.  With the least amount of effort, just working the two rebate deals, you can easily snag Tangled on DVD at Target this week for only $5.99 after rebates.
** I work these rebate offers all the time. They DO send you a check that you just deposit in your bank account, no worries.
I waited and waited and worked rebate deals that made the Princess and the Frog deal amazing when it came out. I got paid $1 to own the DVD.  That is rare. When Beauty and the Beast was rereleased, I waited and waited and still don't own it bc I missed a chance to get it cheaply.  So, keep that in mind when you are considering if and when to buy.

MY IDEA: Grab the 4 Disc Combo Pack for $19.99 or less after printable coupons.  Get $10 back in rebate offers. Pay $2.99 for the Tangled Charm Bracelet offer on Disney Movie Rewards' site.  End up spending less than $13 out of pocket after rebate checks and get the 4 disc 3D Blu Ray, Blu Ray, DVD, and Digital Copy pack, a FREE Golden Book, and a "FREE" Charm Bracelet.  That would make a great Easter present!!  I heart Target.

Kelloggs $10 MasterCard Rewards Card Rebate Offer

Kelloggs is At It Again With a New Rebate Offer!
Buy 10 Boxes of Participating Kelloggs' Cereal,
Get a $10 Pre Paid MasterCard Rewards Card.

Kelloggs is one of my favorite brands for rebates and extra freebies.  They have come out with a new rebate that I am loving the terms of:  Buy 10 participating Kelloggs' Cereals.  Mail in the UPCs off the boxes, no receipts necessary, by 12/2011.  Receive a $10 MasterCard Rewards Card in the mail.

It is that simple! They are calling it a "Gas Rewards" rebate.  It looks like you will just get a prepaid MasterCard debit card with a $10 value that you can use on anything. If you have to use it on gas once it comes in, well, then.. $10 worth of gas for FREE!

If you are a stock piler of cereal, check your pantries and snip those UPCs! If not, don't worry. You have until the end of the year to find your sales and clip your UPCs.  And, I will be keeping a close eye out for Kelloggs sales now!  What would be great is if they put out another movie ticket reward offer. Then, you could buy the cereal from specially marked boxes, submit the code online towards the ticket reward AND still mail the UPC in for the $10 deal.

You guys be on the lookout for a scenario like that and let me know!

Which cereals are you going to clip the UPCs from to submit for this $10 deal?
These:
Kellogg’s All-Bran® Original cereal, Kellogg’s All-Bran® Bran Buds® cereal, Kellogg’s All-Bran®, Complete® Wheat Flakes® cereal, Kellogg’s Smart Start® Strong Heart Antioxidant cereal, Kellogg’s Smart Start® Strong Heart Toasted Oat cereal, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes® cereal, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes® Touch of Honey cereal, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran® cereal, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran® Crunch cereal, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran® Extra! cereal, Kellogg’s Crispix® cereal, Kellogg’s Product 19® cereal, Kellogg’s Mueslix® cereal, Kellogg’s® Cracklin’ Oat Bran cereal, Kellogg’s® Lowfat Granola with Raisins cereal, Kellogg’s® Lowfat Granola without Raisins cereal, Kellogg’s® Fruit Harvest Strawberry/Blueberry cereal
Kellogg’s Rice Krispies® cereal

Go HERE to print your copy of the Official Rebate Offer Form.

As an idea, go HERE to contact Kelloggs directly. (You will go under the "Request More Information" Section)  Tell them you love their products and appreciate their rebate offers.  Thank them for having such great customer rewards.  I have had luck doing this in the past. Sometimes, they have even sent me a package of vouchers for free Kelloggs' products! If you are lucky to get some of those in the mail, use them on the cereals listed above, clip the UPCs, and be that much closer to $10!

Tangled Rebate Offers are Coming In!

Looking to Buy Tangled On Blu Ray or DVD?
Coupon Katarina Has Found Some Good Rebates!
When the Princess and the Frog came out on DVD, I waited for the stars to align just so so I could get the best deal possible to own that on DVD. I waited for the magical $5 off coupon I had found to print lined up with a good sale.  Finally, I found the movie for $13.99 at Target right before my coupon expired. So, I used the $5 off to pay $8.99 for the DVD.  THEN, I submitted a Band Aid rebate deal I worked to get another $5 back on the movie, making it $3.99. THEN, I submitted a Success Rice rebate deal for another $5 back.. Hence, I got paid $1 to own Princess and the Frog on DVD!  I used coupons to get the Band Aids and rice we needed anyway, making the deal even better.

Thus, I love a good Disney DVD rebate offer when I see them.  You have to weigh all the costs and pros and cons on when to buy.  I say, buy the items offering the rebate ASAP with coupons and sales and wait a while to buy the DVD in case you can find a printable coupon or sale.  But, that's just me! Do what you think is best and easiest for you. Are you going to be able to get paid to own a Disney DVD? Probably not. The stars had to align up just so for that to happen for me.

If you see any deals on the Tangled DVD, please let us know!

And, for now, visit Coupon Katarina HERE to see the rebates she has found thus far for Tangled.  With Easter around the corner, I speculate you might see a deal or two on Tangled.

PediaSure or PediaSure SideKicks Try Me Free Rebate

PediaSure/PediaSure Sidekicks Rebate Offer

Have a picky eater? Not sure your child is getting enough protein, fiber, etc in their diet? PediaSure and PediaSure Sidekicks have this great Try Me Free rebate going on right now.  Just go HERE to view the official rebate rules and print a copy of the rebate form.

Basically, you will buy a 6-pack of PediaSure, or a 4-pack of PediaSure Sidekicks and submit your receipt for a full rebate. Minimum purchase must be $6.47, maximum rebate check value will be $13.99.  Also, there was a $5 off manuf coupon in the paper this past week. Depending on how the company decides to value the rebate, this could be a possible moneymaker.   When you submit this rebate, do not forget to write the UPC from the drinks on the receipt when you mail it in.  Rebate request must be received by 4/3/11, and receipts must be dated between 1/23/11 and 3/6/11.

This is such a wonderful rebate. These items are so pricey. When you have a picky eater, you don't want to invest more money into trying to get nutrition into their bodies, just to have them turn their nose up at the drink! This way, you can let your picky eater try the drink free and then make an informed decision about whether this will suit your child's nutritional needs. Pretty great.  My child wants to be a vegetarian. Not because she thinks it is "mean" to eat animals. But, rather, it is because she just really enjoys her broccoli, apples, and salads. I can't wait to see if she likes this drink so I can get more protein in her!

The P&G Rebate Books are being Mailed!

My P&G Brands Rebate Book of Coupons
Worth More than $110 in Savings Came in!
I got this HUGE padded envelop in my mailbox yesterday from P&G. I was pretty excited to see what it was. Then, I laughed. Because it was just a small coupon book in that big envelop.  That small coupon book was such a welcome sight, though! This coupon book has more than $110 worth of P&G brand coupons in it! There are several of each kind and include:
  • $1 off Any One Tide (I will use most of these for FREE 1-Load packs in the Travel Section, and keep one or two in case of a really good deal. If I don't see such a deal, I will buy more free loads right before they expire.)
  • $1 off Gain Detergent or Fabric Enhancer
  • $1 off any One Downy
  • 50c off Bounce
  • 50c off Dawn (which would make the dishsoap 50c or less during a drugstore sale!)
  • $1 off Cascade
  • $1 off Gain Dish Soap (Again, less than 50c or even FREE during a sale!)
  • $3 off Swiffer Wet Jet
  • $1 off any Duster/Sweeper (Swiffer)
  • 50c off any Swiffer Refill
  • $1 off any Charmin MegaRoll
  • $1 off Bounty Towel 6ct or Higher
  • $1 off Pampers Diapers
  • $1 off Luvs Diapers
  • $1 off 8pk or Larger Duracell Coppertop
  • $1 off ANY TWO PRINGLES (look for the snack size, or a sale for super cheap Pringles!)
  • $1 off Iams dry pet food (dog or cat)
  • $1 off any one Pepto-Bismol
  • $1 off Metamucil
  • $1 off any Always
  • $1 off any Tampax
  • $1 off any CREST Toothpaste or gel 4.0oz or larger
  • $1 off any Crest Mouthwash, 946mL or larger
  • $1 off any Oral B Manual Toothbrush
  • $1 off Olay Facial Moisturizer
  • $1 off Pantene Conditioner WYB Pantene Shampoo
  • $1 off one Herbal Essences or Aussie Product (Get it free by looking in the Travel section!)
  • $1 off any Head and Shoulders (free in travel section!)
  • $2 off Clairol Hair Color
  • $1 off CoverGirl
  • $1 off Olay PCC or Lotion
  • $1 off Venus Embrace
  • $1 off any Secret (Travel!)
  • $1 off any Old Spice Deodorant (Travel!)
  • $1 off Old Spice Body Wash (Travel)

These coupons are awesome. They will make for several nice freebies. But, you say, if you buy travel sizes, you have to keep buying them. What I do is I keep the coupons in case of a deal or promotion. If I don't see one to my liking, I go pay for travel sized items with them. The travel sizes come out free, or pretty close to it. Yes, I have a shelf in my bathroom dedicated to such items. Yes, I have to go to that shelf more frequently to get a new one to use than if I had bought larger sizes. But, really. When it is free, why would I mind that? Plus, the travel sizes fit nicer on my in shower shelf rack than the larger ones that always topple over.

How did I get such a lovely coupon rebate book? Periodically, P&G brands will release a rebate form. You have to spend somewhere between $50 and $100 (Pre-coupon amount!) on participating P&G Brands. Then, you circle those items and their prices on your receipts and mail those receipts in! This is one reason why it is a good thing to keep your receipts! Often, a rebate will come out for an item I recently worked a deal on. All I have to do is thumb through my receipt envelop for the right one, and mail it in! Easy! And, if you were to use lots of coupons to get travel sized items for free, you would have already had that much $ towards the rebate done.. for free! If I used 5 $1 off coupons for participating items, and the items themselves each cost $1, my out of pocket would have been $0. BUT I would have gotten credit for $5 worth!  (Pre-Coupon amount).

Did you get the rebate book? Work with a friend and swap for the coupons you each want and need! Cooperate!

Good couponing!

Physician's Formula Rebate Might be a Moneymaker!

Physician's Formula "Try Me Free" Rebate Offer

Physician's Formula is offering a "Try Me Free after Mail-In Rebate" deal. You must have the peelie/tag off the qualifying item to mail in with your original cash register receipt or they will not honor the rebate request.  These rebates require you to circle the purchase price of the item(s), pre-coupons.  Go HERE for official information and downloadable rebate form.

*This might be a moneymaker scenerio. Several people have received up to $10 off in CVS coupons for Physician's Formula products when they scan their Extra-Care card at the in-store kiosk.  This means that you would get the full ORIGINAL cost of the item back through the rebate offer. If you used a $10 coupon, and let's say the product was $20, you will pay $10 out of pocket, but get credit for the whole $20. The rebate check would come back to you as $20. That is getting paid $10 to own Physician's Formula product in this hypothetical scenerio. I say it's worth hopping over to CVS and seeing if you get the coupon! Just make sure the item you buy has the "try me free" label, tag, peelie on it otherwise it isn't a qualifying, limited quantity item.
