Bargain Puzzler: Does the Way You Order an Item Make a Difference in The Cost?

This Week's Bargain Puzzler is About Changing Your Perspective.  And How Being a Critical Thinker and Following the Math Can Save You Money Where You Didn't Even Know You Were Over-Spending It

So, you decide to go grab something fast and cheap for breakfast. And, you go for convenience.. so you pick one of those places you don't even have to leave your car... But, you are lactose intolerant. You want that Bacon Biscuit, but without the cheese.
Do You:
A. Order a Bacon and Cheese Biscuit, as shown on the menu, and ask them to hold the cheese
B. Order a Biscuit with an add on side of bacon
C. It depends on where you go
D. It doesn't matter and comes out the same anyway

The answer is C. It depends on where you go.  But it almost always matters which way you order, from a financial standpoint.

A simple way to add a little extra money in your budget is to pay attention to the menu. What do add ons cost? Follow the math. Here is an example:  I went to Mc Burger Place recently during breakfast. I went through the drive thru. I asked them for a "biscuit please, add bacon." They rang up breakfast bacon biscuit, minus egg, minus cheese.  I could tell because I saw the order screen. I politely told them that was not what I ordered and insisted they ring it the way I asked.  Their way would have cost an extra 45 cents for the same item!  They sighed. Then, I heard them (oops on their part) complaining that "she is telling me how to ring up her order like she knows better than I do.."  When I pulled up to pay the rude lady, I smiled sheepishly, apologized, and explained that it was just cheaper to order a plain biscuit and pay the add on price for the bacon.  Then, I pulled to the next window and asked for a manager and explained the situation to them. They apologized, of course, for the rudeness.

My point though, is that it does matter. And, every cent counts.  When I can take that 45 cents to a drugstore and walk out with 3 Gain dish soaps and 1 Crest toothpaste, that overcharge is just too pricey for me.  Call me cheap. But if you start paying attention, you too will see some extra pocket change acruing. The thing is that most folks just don't stop to think about it.

Another good example is when people ignore the current specials at a fast food place.. or any place... and order a value menu because it is "cheaper."  If the location is offering a Large drink for the price of a small, the value menu is not cheaper. Order a la carte. Spend less money and get more...

My husband and I took a rare opportunity to go on a date last month. We went to Applebees.  We wanted the "2 can dine for $20" which includes an appetizer and two entrees. Also, we knew we wanted two appetizers.. boneless buffalo wings and cheese sticks. (We were living it up! Funny...)  We happened to time it just right to hit the "happy hour".  So, the appetizers we wanted were half off.  Both were available as options to be included in the $20 meal deal. I followed the math. Even half off, the boneless wings were the more expensive item. When we ordered, I made sure to order the boneless wings to be included with the 2 for $20 deal. AND, I ordered the cheese sticks to be the half off app. We saved $2 doing it this way. It just takes a moment.

Why would you ever over pay for something if you could take that moment and save money?  It is very interesting to me how folks just don't take the time to think about it a new way. It is one super easy trick to saving a little more money.. think about how you word your order. It really is that simple!

My Trip To CVS This Week: I Saved More Than $37, Spent About $3

Last Night At CVS I Saved More Than 92%
And I Only Spent  $3.10

My husband needed some hair gel, so I decided to head out to CVS. Since I was going to spend about $3 on the hair gel, anyway, I figured I might as well make that $3 go further. As in more than $40 worth of product further... Yep, I did have to do it in 4 transactions. And, Yes. I did start with $5 in EB made in last week's run to the store. (Remember? I bought a Schick Hydro Razor for less than $2 and got $5 EB back...which I used last night.)

Here's what I did:
Transaction Number 1:
  • Herbal Essences Shampoo- Bought one at the 2/$5.97 price
  • Aussie Hair Gel- Bought one to go with Herbal Essences 2/$5.97
Used a BOGO Coupon and saved $2.99. Then, got $2 EB.  So, It was like paying 98c for BOTH, or   49c EACH for the Gel and Shampoo.
  • Irish Spring Bodywash, 18oz- Bought one at $2.99
Used a 50c off coupon, and got $2 EB.  So, it was like paying 49c.

Then, I paid using my $5 EB from last week.  This took my total down to 47c! After Tax, my total was $1.10 and I received $4 EB.

Transaction Number 2:
Glide Clinical Floss-  $3.49
Used a $1 off Manuf Coupon
Used $2 EB from previous transaction
I paid 73c after tax, and got $2.50 EB back.  Depending on how you look at it, I got paid $1.76 to own floss.

Transaction Number 3:
Crest Pro Health Complete Mouthwash-  $3.49
Used a $1 off Manuf Coupon
Used $2 EB from first transaction
I paid 73c after tax, and got $2.50 EB back. Depending on how you look at it, I got paid $1.76 to own mouthwash.

Transaction Number 4:

Dr. Pepper 2 L- $1
Used a 25c peelie coupon I found in the store, so it was 75c.
Purex 3in1 Sheets, 20 loads-  On sale for $3.99
              Used a $1 manuf coupon, so $2.99
Chex Hot and Spicy Snack Mix-  $1 (a splurge!)

CANDY DEAL:  2 Snickers, 1 Dove. They are on sale for 99c ea, buy 2, get 1 free
The magic coupon kiosk in store gave me 50c off 2 Snickers store coupon, and a coupon for 25c off a Dove candy bar.  At 99c each, buy 2 get one free, that made the candy bars about $1.25 for 3 after these CVS store coupons. BUT I also had a BOGO manuf coupon that took another 99c off. So, about 25 cents for 3 candy bars, or 8c a bar!

I used the $5 worth of EB I got in the Floss and Mouthwash transactions. After the coupons I listed here, and the EB I used, my pre tax total was a NEGATIVE 2 CENTS!!!!!  After tax, this transaction was 54 c for everything!

To recap:
$3.10 got me 3 full sized candy bars, 2L Dr Pepper, 20 load Purex 3in1, Chex mix, Glide Clinical Floss, Crest Complete Mouthwash, Herbal Essences Shampoo, Aussie Hair Gel, and Irish Spring Bodywash.

All items were FULL SIZED.

To those of you that think couponing is not worth it, please reconsider. I am always telling folks I cannot afford generics. This is a good example of why.

Also, you can use coupons on every deal listed, on sale or otherwise. When you see "Spend $30, get $10 EB" that means spend $30 before you take the coupon amounts off the prices. So, you might be able to spend $30, take $15 off for coupons, and get your $10 EB. You would pay $15 out of pocket to spend $30 in this hypothetical.

If you need the exact "assorted items" descriptions, sizes, or deal limits, please let me know. I wanted to get this out to you guys quickly, so I left most of this off. But do NOT hesitate to ask, and I will update the info and let you know.

Happy Shopping!

$12.74 for 5 Coke Fridge Packs and MORE at CVS!

I Spent $12.74, Out Of Pocket at CVS.
I Got 5 Coke Fridge Packs, $3.99 in EB, and MORE!
There really was nothing extra-fancy or special about my CVS trip last night. It took less than ten minutes to plan out, and only a couple of coupons to pull off.  Plus, I was able to grab a copy of the circular that starts on Sunday, Jan. 30- Feb 6.  (For a sneak peak, view it HERE.)

Here is what I did:

Transaction 1:
*12 pk Coke   $2.49
*12 pk Coke  $2.49

*12 pk Coke  $2.49

Total:  $15
Used $10 EB from Last Week's Deals
New Total:  $5 plus Tax! (for 5 fridge packs!)
AND, I received $5 EB from the "Buy 5 Coke Fridge Packs, get $5 EB" deal.(so, it is like I got these for FREE if you are a fan of "fancy math")

*Post tax total was $6.05, my receipt says I saved $22.45 after sale prices, EB, and coupons!

Transaction 2:

*Crest Pro-Health Rinse   $3.99
Secret Flawless Deodorant  $1.49
Stayfree    $6.49
Stayfree  $6.89

Coupons used:
$2 off Secret Flawless (got credit for full amount, so got PAID 51 cents to buy Secret!)
$6.49 off with BOGO Stayfree
$5 EB from previous transaction

Total:  $6.69 after Tax
I got $3.99 back in EB from doing the Crest Pro-Health Rinse EB deal.
"So it's like paying $2.70" If you like fancy math.
The receipt says I saved $14.99
Summary: I spent $12.74 out of pocket to get: 5 Coke fridge packs, 1 Secret, 2 Stayfrees, 1 Crest Rinse.  I saved more than $37.  I got PAID to own Secret. And, the Crest and one of the Stayfree came out free.

* refers to EB deal attached

**BUMMER confession. I had a $1 off Crest Rinse coupon at home on my dresser. Darn. I could have gotten PAID $1 to own that, had I used the coupon. Shucky darn. Oh Well. It doesn't expire until 2013.  Can't win them all.. even if you have a Bargain Binder. Don't think that $1 won't haunt me the teensiest bit though. LOL!

My CVS Trip for This Week

My CVS Shopping Trip for the Week

Yep, Multiple Transactions and EB Rolling!

This week, I worked several of the CVS deals. As per the usual, I broke my transactions up and rolled the Extra Buck deals into each other. I could have done each EB deal as a separate transaction to save me even more out of pocket expense, but I chose to keep it simple with two transactions. My regular cashier was working and she was excited to see what deals I worked. She also gave me something pretty valuable.. NEXT WEEK'S CIRCULAR!  I will be posting a sneak peak for all of you soon, so check the blog often!

Transaction 1: The Pepsi Products Deal (Buy $20 in participating Pepsi Products, get $10 EB back)

This deal is perfect, because I am planning a party for next month!

I bought:

1 Two-Liter of Mountain Dew for $1

3 of the 12 ct "Fridge Packs" of Various Pepsi Sodas for $10 total

1 Four Pack of Starbucks Iced Frappucino Drinks for $4.99

1 Four Pack of AMP Energy Drinks for $4.99

Total Pre-Tax : $20.98  (I had to buy a $1 Two-Liter to work the deal. You HAVE to spend $20 on the products, pre-tax. Since I bought the energy drinks and coffee drinks at $4.99 each, my total without the 2-liter was only $19.98. Yes, that was done on purpose by the masterminds behind the CVS deals. To get this set of EB's, if you put a $4.99 item in the deal, you have to buy something extra to make it work!)

Remember that $10 in EB from last week? Apply it here!

Total out of pocket after $10 EB from last week = $10.98 (plus tax)
AND I got another $10 in EB back! To use on the next transaction....
